BlackBerry tip for dialing phone numbers with letters in them.

I have had a blackberry for a long time, but until recently I didn't know how to call phone numbers with letters in them, like 1 800 CONTACTS, or 1 800 PETMEDS or 1 800 HOOKERS.  I would have to look at a "real" phone and figure it out.  "OK, lets see 1,8,0,0, H, thats a 4, O, that's a 6, another 6, K, that's a 5..." and so on.

Then I figured it out.  The trick is to hold down the "alt" key and type the letters just like you were typing a text.  1,8,0,0,("alt" held down)HOOKERS, and it works!

Hope this helps someone else!

Technology Sucks!

Back in the old days you would get a foot of snow and companies would close for the day.  People would stay home and shovel snow, clean off the cars and go inside and watch TV or play a board game together.

Now that everybody has laptops and home computers that can access the company network via VPN, the company office physically closes, but you are supposed to act like it is any other day, and put in a full day's work.  No time off for shoveling, no TV, no family time.  If you had a 8 AM meeting scheduled, you hold it by teleconference and/or WebEx.

I thought technology was supposed to help us fee up time...

To add insult to injury, I recently worked at a company that had 2 main offices, one in Europe and one in the US.  They didn't believe in "remote employees".  If you weren't in the office, you didn't exist.  They even strongly discouraged working from home for the day if you had a delivery coming or an appointment at lunch time (Heaven forbid you would schedule an appointment during working hours, despite the fact that salaried employees put in 50+ hours a week - but that is another rant for another time...)

But...when it snowed, and the roads were closed, you were expected to connect via the VPN, put in a full day's work from home, and be just as productive as you were in the office.  Hmmm, when it is in the interest of the company, an employee can be as productive working remotely as in the office, but when it is in the interest of the employee, you couldn't possibly be as productive at home!  Just one reason why I started this out with "I recently worked" at that company!!

BJ's Rotisserie Chicken

I picked up a rotisserie chicken @ BJ's for dinner. Net weight 2.5 pounds. Kind of spooky that they can raise chickens that all come out dressed and cleaned at exactly 2.5 pounds. But that isn't the thing that really got me. The thing that really got me was the servings per container (one 2.5 lb chicken). The label claimed "about 12"!!!

Let me try a few calculations, here.
First, 2.5 lbs = 2.5 lbs*16 ounces/lb= 40 ounces.  Serving size = 3 ounces.  3 ounces/serving*12 servings=36 ounces.  Soooo, I'm supposed to believe that the weight of the bones is only about 4 ounces?  One 10th of the total weight of the chicken is in its bones and cartilage?

Second, twelve 3 ounce servings.  Come on!  Have you ever been able to feed more than 5 or 6 people with one chicken? Twelve???  Let's say an average family of four would finish the chicken.  That would mean that each person would eat "about" 4 servings.

Looking at the "Nutrition Facts" one can quickly see why BJ's has made the serving size so small... Four servings would give you 100% of your recommended daily Cholesterol intake, 80% of your recommended daily sodium intake, and over 150% of your recommended daily protein intake!

Maybe that table should be called "Lack of Nutrition  Facts"!!!

Can you be both Conservative and Liberal?

Someone once asked me if I'm conservative or liberal.  I said, "Yes."  I'm conservative about some things and liberal about others.  I'm middle of the road on other things.  I don't think its being wishy-washy (wherever did that phrase come from?), but I can see both sides on many arguments.  Maybe I just don't give a crap about enough things in life...

The death penalty, for example.  I can't say I have strong feelings about it, pro or con.  I also don't have a relative that was murdered by some thug, nor do I have a relative on Death Row (at least not one I know of...).  I guess I go by the "eye for an eye" argument, and the ridiculous cost of keeping someone in jail for life at the taxpayers' expense.

But then I think of the other side.  We are one of the few major industrialized nations that execute people for their crimes.  We are right up there with China, Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.  See this link:  http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0777460.html  Can we really justify our government putting people to death for their crimes?  I go back and forth on this topic.

This wasn't meant to be a red flag in front of a bull, but I do welcome comments.  I'm just presenting some random thoughts.
